God's Servant: John Lewis

You have to tell the whole truth, the good and the bad, maybe some things that are uncomfortable for some people.

The civil rights movement was based on faith. Many of us who were participants in this movement saw our involvement as an extension of our faith. We saw ourselves doing the work of the Almighty. Segregation and racial discrimination were not in keeping with our faith, so we had to do something.

I believe race is too heavy a burden to carry into the 21st century. It's time to lay it down. We all came here in different ships, but now we're all in the same boat.

  1. Hey Miller.

On the racism thread at Banned you shared many things on your family that read like James Micheners "Centennial".

How do you know that stuff, oral history, did they keep diaries or remaining letters?

Man that is better stuff than Forest Gump for sure.

    1. Hello Nck,

I have been researching my genealogy for many years; and that includes oral history, diaries, letters, census records, birth/death/marriage records, newspaper articles, military service records, pension records, etc.
I wrote non-fiction novel about my family history sometime back "An American Family Bible." If you're interested, here's a little bit more about it: https://millerjonesaafb.blogspot.com/

  2. Ah yes.
Time permits me to read bits at a time
The more personal the information is, the more discreet or polite I will be.

Reading parts I'm a bit ashamed about my vicious attacks on america at banned in your presence. Abandoning nuance is my response to myopic hardheadedness.

I'm a systems thinker. My ancestors were part of a (colonial) system that is not looked upon favorably today. But individually they left places better than they found it.

I'm not sure how many people on the wagon trail were concerned about "state/nation building" rather than survive the next day.

I do not tend to judge family too harshly, although my brother in law is somewhat ashamed of some of his that perished at Stalingrad.

I usually find only suffering in stories like that. Different perhaps if one hails from a family of ideologues.

I'm very capitalist until I see pictures of 19th century london slums or 1895 manhattan housing. Nothing beats a good dose of reality and a true and close look at history as a pattern of stories, woven by "us".

    Nck

  3. Jon Lewis was no Saint! With all platitudes and feelings aside, he failed his own constituents continuously. And when you discover the history of the civil rights movement, which party fought against it most rigorously?

    1. As you know, saints are imperfect people who do extraordinary things. Saints are sinners who embrace God's forgiveness and grace, express their love for others and display a willingness to work for the benefit of others. Saints are ordinary folks who are willing to become miracles in the hands of God.

    2. Did you read that whole article? John Lewis deserves recognition for what he experienced and did long ago but people change, for better or worse.

    3. Dr Tina Trent is an ultra-conservative Republican, and I agreed with John Lewis that Donald Trump is an illegitimate president. Moreover, his constituents obviously felt that he was doing a good job for them as they reelected him 16 times - who are we to argue with their assessment of his performance? Finally, his colleagues on both sides of the aisle regarded him as a moral force for good in the House.
